Introducing Our Scientific Advisor: Dr Niall J. Lennon
/We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Niall J. Lennon as AGRF’s new Scientific Advisor.
Dr Lennon brings more than two decades of experience at the forefront of genomics, clinical research, and large‑scale technology innovation. His leadership and scientific expertise will play an important role in shaping AGRF’s strategic direction and supporting our mission to empower Australian research through world‑class genomics.
A Global Leader in Genomics and Clinical Innovation
Niall is the Chair of the Board and Chief Scientific Officer of Broad Clinical Labs, the Broad Institute’s wholly owned clinical subsidiary. In this role, he oversees the development and validation of advanced technologies that support scientific discovery, clinical research, and diagnostic medicine.
He also serves as:
Senior Director of the Genomics Platform and
Institute Scientist at the Broad Institute,
Associate Director at the Gerstner Center for Cancer Diagnostics,
reflecting his broad influence across translational genomics and diagnostics.
Across more than 20 years at the Broad Institute, Niall has contributed to the development of applications for every major next‑generation sequencing platform. In 2013, he established Broad Clinical Labs, a CLIA/CAP‑certified laboratory designed to return results to patients and support clinical trials—an initiative that continues to underpin major healthcare and research programs.
Niall has also played a critical role in landmark regulatory and clinical achievements, including:
Co‑chairing the regulatory working group for the NIH All of Us Research Program,
Leading efforts that enabled FDA authorisation of large‑scale genomics initiatives,
Designing Broad’s COVID‑19 diagnostic testing pipeline, which delivered more than 37 million test results across the New England region,
And in 2025, leading a team that collaborated with Roche to achieve a world‑record fastest human genome sequence.
A Distinguished Academic and Scientific Career
Niall received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from University College Dublin and completed postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. He later earned an executive certificate from the MIT Sloan School of Management, bringing together scientific depth with organisational leadership.
From 2012 to 2024, he also served as Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Tufts University, where he taught a highly regarded Molecular Biotechnology course to hundreds of students.
